Alessi Kettle By Richard Sapper with Melodic Whistle (9091 FM), also please use attached image

This clunker is still for sale?
I encountered this classic piece of 'form-over-function' 1980s kitsch about 24 years ago, and the memory of the inept, utterly impractical design is still as clear as a summer morning.

I'll begin with the Pros:

1. It's pretty.
2. It's just about indestructible (although I see they do sell a replacement whistle, so I might be mistaken).
3. It's pretty!

Now the Cons:

1. It weighs a lot. You need forearms like Popeye to lift this kettle when it's empty. Fill it with water and it's almost immoveable.
2. (Related to the above). It takes ages to boil water. Heck, from cold, it takes about five minutes on a standard burner just to heat up the body of the kettle.
3. (As mentioned by at least one other reviewer) The trigger that you're supposed to pull to move the whistle away from the spout in order to pour water quickly becomes unbearably hot. You need to wear an oven glove to use this kettle.
4. The asymmetrical handle...

Great kettle
This is a great kettle that has a beautiful design and is supremely sturdy. It is an iconic piece that you'll be able to enjoy for years. Granted it is heavy but it will never fall apart unlike your typical kettle. Cleaning is easy and it ages beautifully over the years!

Best ever teakettle
We've had a Richard Sapper teakettle for over two decades. With daily use and our hard water, it's time to replace it, and we wouldn't get any other. It's a joy to behold, to hear, and to use. The trigger pull insulator did come off rather too soon, but can be replaced with a rubber band, or just pull it quickly when hot. Design matters.
